Briefly

I work as an independent biodiversity consultant utilising over 25 years previous experience serving in senior positions for conservation organisations - for 10 years until February 2015, as Secretary General of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).

My skills include project management, policy analysis, research, writing and editing. I have published many research papers and articles as well as popular books. Currently I am co-editing a book entitled "The Nature of the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies" to be published by Pisces Publications. “Rare trees. The fascinating stories of the world’s most threatened species” written by Malin Rivers and I, is now published by Timber Press.

 

 

 

Global Tree Conservation

I am a founder member of the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group, and served as its Chair from 2003 to 2023. A major achievement of the Group was the Global Tree Assessment a joint initiative undertaken with BGCI. The aim was to assess the conservation status of all tree species  and this has been successfully achieved. This resulted in the "State of the World's Trees" report published by BGCI in September 2021, supporting international biodiversity policy and conservation action for trees that are threatened with extinction. In 2017 I was delighted to be awarded an OBE for the conservation and protection of wild tree species worldwide.
